The AI rally takes a breather: why Nvidia and Microsoft closed in the red

At the last US session, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed in the green, but it was a rough day for artificial intelligence stocks. Nvidia and Microsoft lost more than 1-2% of their value despite the broad optimism. Investors began taking profits and shifted money into Apple, which gained 4%. Chinese tech giants such as Baidu and Xpeng fared even worse, falling 3-8%. It is a clear signal: the market is moving from blind faith in the AI hype to hard pragmatism and a wait for real financial reports.

For anyone who believes even a little in the digital future, starting the morning by checking Nvidia's quote has become a national sport. But the latest session on Wall Street showed that even the most powerful rockets sometimes run low on fuel. While the main indexes crept lazily upward, the chief architects of the current tech boom suddenly decided to sit down and rest. Nvidia and Microsoft, which we are used to seeing in a state of perpetual ascent, closed in the red. It is not a crash, but it is an important symptom of what is going on in the heads of the big players.

To understand why a 2% drop in Nvidia makes so much noise, you need to remember the context of recent months. We live in an era when any news about a new chip or a language model update adds billions of dollars to companies' market capitalization. The market is so overheated with expectations that any hiccup is treated as a reason to take profits. Investors now resemble people who have stayed too long at a very loud party and are listening to every rustle, afraid the music is about to stop.

The decline of Microsoft and Meta* while the broader market rose is a classic example of capital starting to look for safer harbors. Against that backdrop, Apple looks like a quiet pier for a tired trader, gaining more than 4%. It is ironic, considering that Tim Cook has often been criticized lately for being slow in the AI arms race. While Microsoft and Google spend tens of billions on infrastructure and model training, Apple simply keeps selling premium devices and subscriptions. In moments of market uncertainty, that conservative strategy suddenly seems more reliable than promises to conquer the world with neural networks in five years.

Meanwhile, the Chinese tech sector continues to face serious pressure that is hard to write off as simple volatility. Xpeng's 8% drop and Baidu's 3% drop suggest investors still fear geopolitical risks and a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy. Baidu, which positions itself as China's main answer to OpenAI, has not yet managed to convince global capital of its invulnerability. This creates an interesting gap: in the West we argue about whether AI stocks are too expensive, while in China companies are fighting to be seen as growth assets at all.

What does all this mean for the industry?

Most likely, we are entering a phase of hard pragmatism. The period when adding the letters AI to a press release was enough to lift a stock 10% is officially coming to an end. The market will now look closely at real revenue from deploying the technology. If Microsoft does not show explosive revenue growth from its cloud services and Copilot in the coming quarters, and Nvidia does not confirm that demand for its chips remains limitless, the correction could be deeper. This does not mean the bubble has burst, but air has definitely started to leak out, making room for more sober valuations.

The key point: The market is shifting its attention from polished presentations to real financial results. Will the AI giants be able to justify their trillion-dollar valuations next quarter?
