Tencent vs. Everyone: Mainland Chinese Investors Bet on the AI Giant

Hong Kong's stock exchange just saw a major reshuffle. While the Tracker Fund of Hong Kong bleeds billions, investors from mainland China are aggressively buying Tencent and Southern Hang Seng Tech. It's a classic "pick the winner" play: instead of buying the whole market, capital is flowing into specific AI champions. A HK$1.5 billion net sale of SMIC hints at a temporary cooling toward hardware makers. The signal for the industry: right now, software and platforms look like a safer bet than "silicon" sovereignty.

Hong Kong's stock market looks like a battlefield right now, and old strategies are dying in plain sight. While index funds like the Tracker Fund record massive outflows, smart money from mainland China — the so-called "southbound flow" — is going on a targeted hunt for the companies that will shape tomorrow's tech landscape. The irony: overall market sentiment remains cautious, but when it comes to specific names, greed suddenly beats fear.

The biggest winner of this unprecedented generosity is Tencent, which pulled in nearly HK$2 billion in a single session. Why does this matter right now? We've grown used to assuming that, under sanctions and trade wars, China will prop up its chipmakers at any cost.

The numbers say otherwise. SMIC, the national champion in semiconductor manufacturing, saw net selling of more than HK$1.5 billion.

Investors seem to be realizing that hardware sovereignty is a long, expensive game where profits can take decades to arrive. Tencent, meanwhile, offers results here and now, thanks to its ecosystem and the deep integration of neural networks into its cloud services and games. This isn't just a stock purchase — it's a vote for software dominance over hardware in the current cycle.

Alibaba-W's fate is just as interesting. The company that was once synonymous with China's tech miracle now sits in the shadow of its main rival. A net outflow of HK$1.

19 billion suggests the market has revised its expectations. As Alibaba tries to restructure its many divisions and catch the generative AI train, investors prefer Tencent's clearer, more stable trajectory. It's a textbook case of internal efficiency and a clear AI product strategy beating unwieldy corporate transformations.

The inflow into the Southern Hang Seng Tech fund is also worth noting. It signals that professional players haven't given up on the tech sector as such. They've simply become pickier.

Rather than blindly betting on the whole market rising, they're choosing narrow niches tied to high-tech software and telecom. China Mobile also ended up in the green, which supports the thesis that data transmission infrastructure remains the foundation of the entire modern digital economy. Without stable 5G and cloud, no AI will ever get off the ground.

What does all this mean for the global market? Chinese capital is getting more and more pragmatic. The era when you could pour money into any company with a "tech" label is over.

We're watching natural selection in action. Investors are fleeing broad funds that track the index and moving into companies that show real progress in applied artificial intelligence and cloud computing. It's a harsh but fair lesson for everyone in the industry: either you show the real value of your algorithms, or the market writes you off, no matter how loudly you shout about technological breakthroughs.

The bottom line: the market is betting on software giants and is willing to temporarily sacrifice hardware makers. Does this mean the era of chip shortages and faith in the silicon kings is officially over?
