Claude vs. the Apocalypse: Anthropic Is Teaching Its AI to Be Wiser Than Its Creators

Anthropic is changing its safety strategy: instead of rigid prohibitions, the company is teaching Claude "wisdom." The idea is for the model to understand context and ethical dilemmas on its own, rather than simply follow instructions. It is a direct response to the arms race between OpenAI and Google. If Claude learns to anticipate risks better than humans do, we get the most reliable digital babysitter yet. If it does not, the concept of "safe AI" will remain a nice slogan for investors. The key point: Anthropic is trying to build an AI with an inner compass.

While market leaders compare parameter counts and text generation speeds, Anthropic's offices are busy with something far more elusive. The company, founded by former OpenAI staff precisely because of disagreements over safety, has decided to go all in. Its new bet is not just "fences" around a neural network, but an attempt to teach Claude something like wisdom. It sounds like the setup of a science-fiction novel, but it is a pragmatic calculation: if AI becomes smarter than us, it should understand for itself why it shouldn't turn the planet into a warehouse of paperclips.

To see why this matters now, recall how AI safety worked until this point. Usually it looked like an endless list of prohibitions: don't talk about this, don't write about that, don't help with dangerous recipes. The problem is that hackers and merely curious users find "holes" in these rules faster than engineers can patch them. Anthropic, meanwhile, promotes the idea of "Constitutional AI," in which the model has a set of basic principles. Now this approach is evolving toward a deeper understanding of context. The developers want Claude to grasp the consequences of its actions the way a mature person does.

This shift in strategy did not come out of nowhere. After GPT-4 and other models showed they could bypass software restrictions through elaborate role-play, it became clear that the old methods do not work. Anthropic is trying to build a system with an inner ethical backbone. That is critically important ahead of truly powerful agents that will be able to act on the internet on their own, handle money and manage infrastructure. Without "wisdom," such an agent becomes an extremely efficient but utterly mindless machine of destruction.

Critics, of course, are ironic about it. It is easy to talk about an algorithm's wisdom when your company is valued in the billions of dollars and you need to stand out against giants like Google. But set the skepticism aside, and Anthropic raises a fundamental question: can we control an intelligence that surpasses our own at all by means of external rules? The company's answer is no; control has to be internal. That makes Claude a kind of "philosopher" among neural networks, spending precious compute cycles reflecting on good and evil.

What does this mean for the industry? First, Anthropic is setting a new standard for a "safe" brand. While others make excuses for hallucinations and toxic answers, Dario Amodei's team is building the image of the most responsible player. Second, it puts pressure on competitors. If Claude really proves more stable and predictable in complex scenarios, it will be easier for the corporate sector to choose it over more powerful but "wild" alternatives. Safety is turning from a boring section of the documentation into a key market advantage.

Ultimately, we are watching a grand experiment. Can a set of mathematical functions grasp the concept of responsibility? Or will Claude's "wisdom" remain only a very high-quality imitation that collapses at the first encounter with a truly unusual situation? Anthropic believes humanity simply has no other path. Either we teach AI to understand us, or we become, for it, just a dataset from the past.

The key point: Anthropic is trying to turn Claude into the first "ethical" agent that understands not only the letter of the rules but their spirit. Could competition for the "wisest AI" replace the race for the "most powerful AI"?
