Anthropic's $20 billion bid to outplay OpenAI

Anthropic is finalizing a funding round worth more than $20 billion, and the deal could close as early as next week. After the success of Claude 3.5 Sonnet, investors are now convinced that Dario Amodei can put up real competition against Sam Altman. The money will do more than pad the balance sheet. It will fuel purchases of Nvidia chips and pay the cloud computing bills. In an industry where training a single model costs close to a billion, Anthropic is going all in. The round turns the company from a cautious AI safety startup into a full-fledged aggressor in the large language model market.

Twenty billion dollars. Let that number sink in. It's the budget of a small country or the price of a major airline, and now it's also the entry ticket to the club of companies aiming to build "godlike" artificial intelligence. Anthropic, which long pitched itself as the "ethical and cautious" alternative to OpenAI, is wrapping up a deal that will permanently change its standing. According to sources close to the process, the massive funding round will close within days. It marks the end of the era of romantic AI enthusiasm and the start of an all-out war of capital.

To understand how we got here, it helps to recall the backstory. Former OpenAI employees founded Anthropic after leaving Sam Altman's company precisely over disagreements about safety and excessive commercialization. The Amodei siblings wanted to build AI that wouldn't go rogue and wipe out humanity. Reality turned out to be ironic: to make AI safe, you first have to make it smart. And to make it smart, you need hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and billions of dollars for electricity. As a result, the "safe" startup now has to raise the same astronomical sums as the company its founders once fled.

Why are investors willing to write checks this big right now? The answer lies in the recent success of Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Anthropic spent a long time playing catch-up, but its latest iteration forced many to admit that Claude not only matches GPT-4o but beats it in some areas, such as coding and natural-sounding language. Investors saw a chance to break OpenAI's monopoly. When you have a product that actually works and that developers like, $20 billion stops looking crazy. It looks like a sensible bet on the second horse in a race where the prize is control over the future of the world's software.

This financial downpour has a downside, though. By taking this kind of money from giants like Amazon and Google, Anthropic inevitably gives up some of its independence. The company is no longer simply a lab full of scientists; it's a powerful lever in the hands of cloud providers. Most of these billions won't even stay in Anthropic's accounts. They'll flow back to the same investors almost immediately as payment for server capacity. It's an elegant arrangement: the money makes a loop and returns to Big Tech, leaving the startup only the right to stay in the race.

What does this mean for the industry as a whole? First, the barrier to entry into the LLM top league has become practically unreachable for new players. If you don't have a couple dozen billion behind you, you can't even start the conversation. Second, the market is consolidating around two or three centers of power. AI is turning into a duopoly or a triopoly, with Anthropic serving as the main intellectual counterweight to OpenAI. And while the Amodeis still talk about safety, their actions show that scale matters most right now. Without enormous compute, any talk about ethics will remain just talk in empty San Francisco offices.

The bottom line: Anthropic has fully become a mirror image of OpenAI. Can the company keep its "soul" and its safety principles when tens of billions of dollars of investor money are at stake and it has to show multiple-fold growth every six months?
