Adobe: AI traffic to US retail sites jumped 393% in Q1 2026

Adobe recorded explosive growth in AI traffic to US retail: up 393% in the first quarter and up 269% in March alone. Visitors from ChatGPT and Perplexity don't just browse. They buy, with higher conversion rates and larger average orders than regular users. AI assistants are becoming a full-fledged sales channel, one retailers can no longer ignore.

According to Adobe Analytics, traffic from AI sources to US retailers' sites grew 393% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier. March alone saw growth of 269%. This is not just a traffic statistic. Adobe's key finding is that users arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar services convert better and spend more than ordinary visitors from Google or direct visits.

Adobe Analytics is one of the largest aggregators of data on shopper behavior in online retail. The platform covers thousands of US retailers and records hundreds of millions of transactions every year, which makes its data some of the most representative in the industry.

By AI traffic, the company means referrals from platforms built on generative AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Claude and others. These tools increasingly serve as the entry point to the purchase funnel, in place of traditional search.

Growth of 393% in a quarter is phenomenal speed. As recently as 2023, AI traffic in retail was statistically insignificant and was barely tracked as a separate category. In 2024 Adobe saw the first signs of a trend, and the start of 2026 turned it into a full-fledged marketing channel. Notably, growth is accelerating: Q1 as a whole was up 393%, while March alone was up 269% year over year. This suggests that AI assistants' penetration into everyday shopping is not merely continuing but intensifying.

The most important point in the report is not the absolute growth in traffic but its quality. Users arriving through AI tools show higher conversion and a larger average order than those who find a store through ordinary search. The explanation is straightforward: when someone asks ChatGPT about a specific product, they get a recommendation with a detailed rationale.

By the time they click through to the retailer's site, they already know what they want to buy and arrive with a clear intent to purchase, rather than a wish to browse hundreds of items in search of the right one. In effect, the AI assistant takes on the role once played by aggregator and review sites: it helps the user form a decision before the transaction.

For the e-commerce industry, this trend means marketing strategies need rethinking. Traditional SEO targets search crawlers: keywords, backlinks, technical optimization. AI models work differently. They synthesize information from many sources and favor content that is structured, authoritative and able to give a clear answer to a specific question. This has given rise to a new discipline, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Under its logic, the winners are those who have built detailed specifications, comparison tables and expert content, which is exactly what an AI model will cite to users in its answers.

Large US retailers are already adapting: they are updating product pages, adding structured data and FAQ blocks, and hiring GEO specialists. The first specialized agencies appeared as early as 2024, and their number is now growing fast, much as a whole SEO industry emerged on the back of Google in the late 1990s.

The Adobe report confirms that AI search has moved beyond the experimental stage and become a real channel for acquiring customers. Almost four hundred percent growth in a quarter reflects a shift in the behavior of millions of users. A channel that generated a few percent of traffic a year ago is already comparable in importance to email marketing and is rapidly closing in on organic search. Retailers that do not adapt their strategies to this reality risk finding themselves behind, and the gap will widen with each quarter.
