Allbirds rebrands as NewBird AI, trades sneakers for GPU rentals

Allbirds, known for its eco-friendly sneakers and once valued at $4 billion, has announced a complete overhaul of its business model. The brand will rename itself NewBird AI and offer GPU rentals as a service. It's a radical move: compute capacity for AI instead of sustainable footwear. The company has clearly concluded that competing in artificial intelligence pays better than competing in apparel.

Allbirds, a company valued at four billion dollars in 2021, has announced a complete overhaul of its business model. The brand is dropping its eco-friendly wool-and-sugarcane sneakers, moving into GPU-as-a-Service, and renaming itself NewBird AI. It's one of the most unexpected corporate pivots in recent years.

The Allbirds story shows how quickly retail ambitions can collapse. Founded in 2016, the company sold comfortable sneakers with a sustainability pitch: materials made from merino wool, eucalyptus, and recycled plastic bottles. It went public in 2021 at a valuation of around four billion dollars. The brand seemed to have it all: a loyal following, a cult product, and a good story for investors.

But the rise was followed by a steep fall. Competition in comfort footwear intensified, sales slowed, and the stock dropped more than 90 percent from its peak. The company tried several times to get back on track: it trimmed product lines, replaced management, and cut costs. None of it worked well enough.

Now Allbirds is doing what became a trend across corporate America in 2024–2026: pivoting toward artificial intelligence. The new name is NewBird AI. The new mission is renting out GPU compute to businesses building AI applications. In effect, the company wants to become a cloud compute provider, competing with players like CoreWeave, Lambda Labs, or AWS in the narrow GPU infrastructure segment.

GPU-as-a-Service really is a hot market. Demand for accelerators to train and run inference on language models surged after late 2022, and the major clouds still can't keep up. Startups and mid-sized companies often struggle to get access to the chips they need, especially Nvidia's server GPUs. That's the gap NewBird AI hopes to fill.

The question is whether the company has any real assets to make this transition. A footwear retailer and a cloud infrastructure provider aren't just different markets; they're different universes in terms of technical expertise, capital expenditure, and operational capabilities. Building GPU clusters requires multimillion-dollar investments, specialized engineering knowledge, and well-established supply chains. Allbirds has no public track record in any of these.

Skeptics are already comparing the move to the 2017–2018 wave of crypto rebrandings, when companies added "Blockchain" to their names and watched their stock climb. The Allbirds pivot risks landing in the same category: a splashy rebrand without a clear technological foundation.

Still, desperate pivots sometimes pay off. Tech history has examples of 180-degree turns that led to unexpected success. For Allbirds, GPU rentals are at the very least a way to buy time and test whether the brand has any trust capital it can convert in a new space.

It's yet another reminder that the AI hype is now so strong that companies are willing to abandon their identity entirely to get a piece of the narrative. The only question is whether NewBird AI's story ends in a successful turnaround or goes down in the textbooks as a case study in corporate desperation.
