Harvey has confirmed an $11 billion valuation after a new funding round that included Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins and venture investor Elad Gil. This is Sequoia's third investment in the startup, a rare event even in an overheated AI market: funds typically do not triple down on a single company without very weighty reasons.

Harvey was founded in 2022 and builds an AI platform for legal work on top of large language models. The product handles specific tasks: researching precedents, drafting and reviewing contracts, due diligence in M&A deals, and preparing legal memoranda. Its customers include large law firms from the Am Law 100 ranking and international corporate practices. The startup positions itself not as a replacement for lawyers but as a productivity multiplier: one specialist with Harvey does work that used to require an entire team.

The platform runs on top of models from Anthropic and OpenAI, adding a layer of legal expertise: proprietary data for fine-tuning, specialized prompts, and tools for working safely with confidential client databases. This removes one of the key barriers to adoption in a conservative industry: fear of data leaks.

An $11 billion valuation makes Harvey one of the most expensive startups in the Legal AI segment. As recently as 2024, the company was valued at roughly $3 billion. The nearly fourfold increase reflects not just the general excitement around AI companies but also confirmed metrics: Legal AI is one of the few vertical segments where customers see a measurable return on investment, not merely the potential of the technology.

The legal industry is an ideal candidate for automation with language models. A partner's hourly rate at a large firm reaches several thousand dollars, and a significant share of that time goes to tasks an LLM completes in minutes: searching for precedents, checking contract terms, drafting standard documents. At the same time, legal work demands high accuracy and references to specific sources, which is exactly where language models with citation capabilities come into their own. Harvey is trained on specialized legal texts and can handle jurisdiction-specific nuances, which fundamentally sets it apart from general-purpose tools.

Competition in the segment is growing. Clio, Ironclad, ContractPodAi and Thomson Reuters are active with their own AI products, while large firms are testing solutions built on GPT-4 and Claude. Harvey maintains its lead through vertical specialization: the company is not building a horizontal tool but investing in industry data and deep integration with the workflows of legal practices.

Sequoia, a16z and Kleiner Perkins in the same round is a rare configuration. Top funds usually compete for a stake rather than invest together. Joint participation by three leaders of the venture market points either to a large round size or to an unwillingness to miss the category leader. The presence of Elad Gil, one of Silicon Valley's most respected business angels, strengthens the signal further.

At an $11 billion valuation, Harvey is approaching the threshold at which the market expects an IPO or a strategic acquisition. Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis and large technology companies have long been watching the startup's growth. For the Legal AI market, the current round is final confirmation: the segment is no longer experimental and has become a full-fledged investment category with a proven business model and a real path to liquidity.
