Google is replacing news headlines in search with AI-generated ones

Google is now replacing news headlines in search results with AI-generated versions. The company had already done this in Google Discover, and the experiment has now reached the classic "10 blue links." Journalists have documented cases where the AI headline distorted the meaning of the original article.

Google has started replacing the headlines of news articles in search results with ones generated by artificial intelligence, and the change touches the very foundation of how people find information online.

Since the early 2000s, Google Search has been the bedrock of the internet. Users trusted the so-called "10 blue links" for their predictability: you see an article's headline, you get that article. It was an unwritten contract between the search engine, publishers and readers, and it stayed unchanged for decades.

Now Google is breaking that contract. The company had already tested headline replacement in the Google Discover feed, and that experiment was officially explained as "a feature, not a bug." The same thing is now starting to happen in classic search results.

Journalists at The Verge documented several specific cases: Google showed headlines that the newsroom did not write, and in some of them the meaning of the original piece was distorted.

This creates a serious problem for media outlets. Publishers spend resources on writing accurate, carefully tuned headlines, from both an editorial and an SEO standpoint. When Google swaps them for an AI version, the publisher loses control over how its material is presented to millions of users. Worse, if the AI headline distorts the meaning, the reputational damage falls on the author and the newsroom, not on Google.

So far, the scale of the practice and the criteria that trigger it remain unknown. It is unclear when exactly Google decides to regenerate a headline, based on what signals, and how often this happens. The company has not provided exhaustive comments.

What is happening is an indicator of a broader shift. Google is consistently embedding generative AI at the key points where people interact with content: first AI Overviews on top of results, now editing the headlines themselves. Each step moves the user further from the primary source and strengthens Google's role as an interpreter rather than merely an aggregator of information.

For the news industry, which is already fighting for traffic and audience trust, this is an alarming signal.
