Sequen raises $16M for TikTok-style personalization aimed at consumer companies

Startup Sequen has raised $16M in a Series A round. The company built an AI ranking and personalization engine, comparable to TikTok's algorithm, and now offers it to large consumer brands as an API. The core idea: ByteDance-level personalization should no longer be the privilege of tech giants.

Startup Sequen has closed a $16M Series A round and announced it is scaling its AI personalization platform for large consumer companies. The company's technology reproduces TikTok's key competitive advantage, an algorithm that predicts in real time exactly what a user will want to see next, and makes that tool available to any retailer or media platform.

What Sequen is building

The company developed its own machine-learning ranking and personalization engine. The system processes a user's behavioral signals (clicks, watch time, purchase history, pauses and exits) and builds a dynamic model of preferences. Based on that model, the algorithm prioritizes items in feeds, product catalogs, push notifications and recommendation blocks.

Until now, technology at this level was available only to the largest platforms: ByteDance, Netflix, Amazon, Spotify. Building it required in-house ML teams of dozens of specialists, petabytes of historical data and several years of iteration. Sequen positions its product as an API or embeddable SDK that plugs in without the need to build infrastructure from scratch.

Why it matters

The gap between TikTok's personalization and that of a typical online store is enormous. TikTok keeps users engaged for 95 minutes a day, largely because the system picks the next video more accurately than any editorial selection or simple collaborative filter. For consumer companies the stakes are high: by industry estimates, the conversion difference between smart and standard personalization is 15–30%. Netflix values its recommendation engine at $1 billion a year in savings from audience retention. Most brands lack not only such technology but also an understanding of how to approach it.

The round and plans

The round's investors have not yet been disclosed. For a Series A company, $16M is a typical sum for a B2B infrastructure product with proven product-market fit. Sequen will put the funds toward expanding its engineering team, scaling its cloud infrastructure and entering new verticals: e-commerce, video streaming, news aggregators and health apps.

The key difference in the business model: Sequen is not a B2C product but a technology foundation. The company is building an infrastructure layer on which other organizations build the user experience. That puts it strategically closer to Stripe in payments than to end-user consumer apps.

Who competes

The AI personalization market is crowded but fragmented. Braze focuses on personalized marketing communications. Dynamic Yield, acquired by McDonald's and resold to Mastercard, handles web personalization. Bloomreach and Insider work in similar niches. However, most of these solutions target the marketing layer: emails, banners, notifications. Sequen aims for a deeper level: an algorithm that governs the very structure of content inside a product, what the recommendation systems of Pinterest or YouTube do, now in a white-label format for any business.

What it means

TikTok-level personalization is turning from a privilege of tech giants into basic infrastructure. Companies like Sequen are accelerating that shift by offering ready-made AI engines instead of years of in-house development. For the consumer internet, this means that within a few years the gap between the user experience in TikTok and in the average retail app will begin to narrow, and to narrow fast.
