VisioLab raises $11M for barcode-free AI checkouts at stadiums and universities

German startup VisioLab has raised $11 million in a Series A round to scale its self-service AI checkouts. Its camera-based system recognizes food and drinks without barcodes in less than 10 seconds. The technology already runs at 43 points of sale in the Orlando Magic's NBA arena and at about a third of German university campuses. The investors are eCAPITAL and Simon Capital.

German startup VisioLab, based in Osnabrück, has raised $11 million in a Series A round. The money will go toward scaling its self-service AI checkouts, which recognize food and drinks without barcodes in less than 10 seconds. The lead investors are the venture funds eCAPITAL and Simon Capital.

The system runs on an iPad with a built-in camera. The customer simply sets down a tray or holds up their food, and a neural network identifies each item in real time and generates the receipt automatically. No barcodes, no manual entry, no weighing platforms. It all happens through computer vision: the model is trained to recognize thousands of prepared food and drink items from different angles, under different lighting, in different dishware.

The technology is well past the prototype stage. VisioLab operates at 43 points of sale inside the Kia Center in Orlando, home of the NBA's Orlando Magic. That means serving thousands of fans at peak load, when long lines are the main enemy of the customer experience. Beyond basketball, the system covers about a third of German university campuses, where student canteens have historically been the first testing grounds for service automation.

The market VisioLab is targeting is huge: high-traffic venues such as stadiums, corporate canteens, university campuses and airports are especially attractive for this kind of solution. The $11 million will go specifically toward international expansion in these segments.

Its main competitive edge over larger rivals is ease of deployment. Systems like Amazon Just Walk Out require hundreds of sensors, cameras around the entire perimeter and serious IT infrastructure. Installation takes weeks and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. VisioLab's solution runs on standard iPads that can be mounted in a few hours. For a university canteen operator or a stadium caterer, that is a fundamental difference in the barrier to entry.

Speed is another key advantage. At 10 seconds per transaction, with a well-organized flow, a checkout can process many times more people. For a stadium with 20,000 spectators who have 20 minutes of intermission to buy food, that is direct revenue. For a university canteen with a one-hour lunch break, it decides whether students manage to eat at all.

The company was founded in Osnabrück, a city of about 160,000 people in Lower Saxony that has never been associated with the German startup ecosystem. Even so, VisioLab has broken into the US market and gained a foothold in one of the most demanding settings: sports arenas with strict throughput requirements. This is not just a nice press release but confirmation of product-market fit in real-world conditions.

Automating checkout is one of the few segments where AI adoption does not trigger a sharp conflict over jobs. The machine takes over the routine scanning of items, while staff shift to preparing food and maintaining quality. Political resistance is lower, and decisions to adopt move faster.

$11 million is a small sum by American venture standards, but quite sufficient for a German B2B startup with a finished, working product. The main question now is whether VisioLab can scale faster than the market for AI recognition in retail and food service fills up with larger players with greater resources.
