Bezos's AI lab aims to raise $10 billion and take on xAI
Jeff Bezos has thrown himself into the race for AI leadership. His dedicated AI lab is preparing to close a $10 billion funding round, one of the largest in the tech industry's history. For comparison, Elon Musk founded xAI in 2023 and later merged the company with X and SpaceX. If the round closes, Bezos's lab will play in the same league as OpenAI and xAI from day one.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is entering the race for AI leadership with a serious ace up his sleeve: his dedicated AI lab is preparing to raise $10 billion. That would be one of the largest private rounds in the tech industry's history, and a clear signal that the world's richest man is betting on AI no less heavily than Elon Musk or Sam Altman. According to available reports, Bezos's lab is already in active talks with potential investors.
A $10 billion round looks impressive even against the broader boom in AI venture funding: according to Pitchbook, AI startups raised more than $100 billion worldwide in 2024, but individual rounds rarely exceed $5-7 billion. For comparison, OpenAI raised a record $6.6 billion in 2024 at a $157 billion valuation, while Elon Musk's xAI closed a $6 billion round.
Raising $10 billion in a single round amounts to a bid to play in the top league from day one. Bezos and Musk have long followed parallel paths, whether in rockets (Blue Origin vs. SpaceX) or now in AI.
Musk founded xAI in 2023, and in 2025 merged it with the social network X and the aerospace company SpaceX, building an integrated conglomerate where AI models power both consumer products and space exploration work. Bezos, for his part, already holds a strong position in the industry: Amazon is actively building AI products through AWS and Alexa, and Bezos personally invested in Anthropic, the developer of Claude, putting in more than $4 billion, according to media reports. But that apparently isn't enough for him.
Bezos's new venture will likely be a standalone entity, separate from Amazon. This approach has several advantages. First, an independent lab can move faster and more flexibly without having to answer to the interests of a public company's shareholders.
Second, it avoids regulatory constraints that could arise from large-scale AI development inside the world's largest marketplace. Third, a separate entity has an easier time attracting top researchers who value academic freedom and startup culture over corporate hierarchy. Ten billion dollars is not just a line on a balance sheet.
In practice, it means the ability to build compute infrastructure that can compete with the world's leading AI companies. Training frontier models already costs hundreds of millions of dollars per run, and GPT-5-class systems are estimated to cost billions. It also means access to top talent: compensation packages for leading AI researchers at Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic reach $1-3 million a year.
Without comparable capital, there's simply no way to enter this race for talent. The open question is which niche Bezos's lab will target. The foundation model space — building base language and multimodal models — is already crowded: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, xAI.
The lab may instead bet on applied AI for specific industries such as medicine, biology, and energy, where competition is still lower and the potential value is enormous. If the round closes, it will be one of the biggest AI industry events of 2025. A world where Musk controls xAI plus X plus SpaceX, and Bezos controls his own AI lab plus Amazon plus Blue Origin, looks like a clash of tech empires for control over the most transformative technology of the century.
Bezos, by all appearances, has no intention of watching this race from the sidelines.
