Amazon Bedrock adds cross-region AI request routing for EU customers

AWS has extended Amazon Bedrock for Europe: Cross-Region Inference (CRIS) automatically routes AI requests between EU regions. European companies get access to frontier models without violating GDPR, because data stays in permitted regions. Applications need no code changes, and standard pricing applies.

AWS has expanded Amazon Bedrock for European companies: its Cross-Region Inference (CRIS) mechanism automatically routes AI requests across several AWS regions while keeping data privacy requirements intact. The feature is particularly relevant for organizations in tightly regulated EU industries.

Why European businesses need it

Access to the most powerful generative AI models is not a given for European companies. Frontier models and high-performance GPU accelerators are spread unevenly across AWS regions: new releases often appear first in US zones and reach the EU only months later. During peak load, individual regions become overloaded, causing delays and errors on API calls.

The regulatory backdrop is strict as well: GDPR restricts cross-border transfers of personal data, and the AI Act, now in force, adds requirements for transparency and auditability of processing. As a result, businesses have had to choose: either powerful models outside Europe, or legal compliance with a limited set of tools.

CRIS removes this conflict. The system automatically balances load across approved EU regions, providing access to the newest models without breaching the requirements.

How the routing works

Amazon Bedrock with CRIS introduces "cross-region inference profiles": a set of regions within which request processing is permitted. The developer defines the allowed zone (for example, EU regions only: Frankfurt, Ireland, Stockholm), and Bedrock distributes traffic among them on its own, taking into account current load and model availability.

  • Requests are routed automatically, with no changes to application code
  • Data is processed strictly within the specified geographic zone
  • The newest models are available even if not yet deployed in a particular local region
  • The likelihood of failures caused by overload in a single region is reduced
  • Standard Amazon Bedrock pricing applies, with no additional markup

All major model families on the platform are supported: Anthropic's Claude, Llama, Mistral and others available through Bedrock. Switching between regions is invisible to the end application, since the API stays the same.

Practice and limitations

Cross-region routing works at the Amazon Bedrock API level: companies already using the platform can enable CRIS without reworking their architecture. For new customers, this means GDPR compatibility is built into the infrastructure rather than secured through legal clauses in a contract.

An important nuance: CRIS guarantees that data stays within the selected cluster of regions, but does not rule out processing outside the customer's "home" region within that cluster. For regulated industries such as finance, healthcare and insurance, this will require additional review with the legal department and a signed DPA (Data Processing Agreement).

Latency is a separate question. Routing between regions adds milliseconds of network delay. For most GenAI applications this is not critical, but real-time workloads such as voice bots and interactive chats should be tested separately.

"AWS customers need tools to use model availability and compute capacity across multiple regions without violating security and privacy requirements,"

AWS explains in its official blog.

What this means

CRIS removes one of the main operational barriers to adopting generative AI in the European enterprise sector. Companies that postponed scaling their AI projects because of regulatory uncertainty now get a ready-made infrastructure answer: full access to Bedrock's model portfolio within the EU. For the competitive landscape, this means the technical gap between American and European teams is starting to narrow.
