Tokenmaxxing and the Chasm: OpenAI Buys Everything While Anthropic Hides a Model

The gap between AI insiders and the rest of the world is widening, and you can already hear it in the vocabulary. OpenAI is buying fintech services and TV shows. A shoe brand has repositioned itself as an AI infrastructure company. Anthropic unveiled a model it considered too powerful for a public release. A new term has taken hold in the industry: tokenmaxxing. The only question is whether any of this leads somewhere that truly matters.

The gap between those inside the AI industry and everyone else keeps growing, and it now shows not only in budgets but in vocabulary. Some companies are buying up fintech startups and TV shows, others are renaming themselves "AI infrastructure companies," and still others publicly claim they have built something too powerful to release openly.

OpenAI has recently been pushing the boundaries of its business far beyond AI development. The company is acquiring everything from financial apps to television content producers. It is no longer just an AI lab: it is a vertically integrated media and technology conglomerate, taking shape in plain view of the whole industry. The logic is clear: the more points of contact with users, the more data, and data is the fuel for the next generation of models.

Against this backdrop, a well-known shoe company made an unexpected move and repositioned itself as an AI infrastructure player. It sounds odd, but it reflects a real trend: the word "AI" has become so magical to investors that even companies from entirely different industries rush to write it into their identity. An important caveat: far from all such claims are backed by real technical capabilities.

Anthropic took a different path. The company unveiled a new model and immediately warned that it is too powerful to release publicly. The reaction was mixed. On one hand, this is honesty, an acknowledgment that the capabilities of AI systems are starting to outpace society's readiness to deal with them. On the other, it is marketing: nothing stokes interest like the phrase "we can't show you this." Still, Anthropic has consistently held to a position of responsible development, and it has enough reputational capital for people to trust this narrative.

The term "tokenmaxxing" emerged in AI circles to describe an approach in which systems literally fill the entire available context with tokens, generating as much text as possible or processing as much incoming data as possible. It sounds productive, but critics ask whether we are chasing quantity at the expense of quality. More tokens do not mean better understanding or more accurate results. Sometimes it is just noise multiplied by compute.

This is exactly where the main gap shows. AI insiders (researchers, engineers, investors, entrepreneurs) work with terms and concepts that sound like a foreign language to the rest of the world. While the industry argues about benchmarks, architectures and context window sizes, most people simply want to understand how ChatGPT or Claude is useful to them personally.

Suspicion of AI is growing in step with spending. Companies are pouring billions into infrastructure, compute and talent, and those sums keep rising. When exactly these investments will start paying off for a broad audience remains an open question. Regulators, journalists and ordinary users are asking the same questions: what exactly are we building, who is paying for it, and who ultimately wins.

Tokenmaxxing works as a metaphor for what is happening overall: the industry generates more and more (models, claims, deals, words), and the question of whether this leads anywhere truly important grows sharper. A technology boom is not yet an answer to the question of what it was all for.
