Google DeepMind employees have voted to form a union. Their main goal is to stop the company from using their work for military purposes, including for Israel and the US. It is one of the rare cases in which AI developers actively push back against the direction of their own technology.

How the vote went Staff at DeepMind's site at Google's UK headquarters held a union vote.

Employees asked management to recognize the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite the Union as joint bargaining representatives. The result was striking: 98% of CWU members working at DeepMind voted to form a union. They submitted a letter with this request to Google management on Tuesday. Approval that high is rare in the corporate world, especially on politically sensitive issues. Workers clearly consider the problem serious and are prepared to fight for their convictions.

What concerns the employees

Workers said their AI models are already being used in ways that violate international law. In a written statement distributed by the CWU, one employee said: "We don't want our models to be complicit in violations of international law, but they are already assisting in the genocide of Palestinians." Employee concerns cover several areas: Use of AI systems in military operations and targeting Assistance in potential human rights violations Lack of transparency and oversight over how the technology is used A gap between Google's stated values and the actual use of its work * An ethical conflict between engineering ambition and moral responsibility ## The broader context This is not the first time tech workers have organized around ethical goals.

Google and its parent company Alphabet have already faced union drives and employee protests, particularly over military contracts. In 2018, more than 3000 Google employees signed a letter opposing Project Maven, a military contract involving video processing for drones. That conflict showed that some people inside these companies are willing to risk their careers for their principles.

What it means Union activity in the AI industry is growing.

Companies are increasingly exposed to employee demands that they meet ethical standards. Google DeepMind must now formally respond to the workers' request: either recognize the union and begin negotiations, or openly justify its position on how its technology is used. Either choice will have consequences for the company's reputation and its standing as an AI leader.
